Tonia is present before the playing of each cassette tape, and disappears when Desmond presses play. Tonia speaks words of encouragement to the doctor, and suggests he pursue his mission of solving why his Patients are dying. It is likely that Tonia's death led to the mounting of Desmond's inherent paranoia and guilt, emotions that plunged him into the self-doubt and depression that was only heightened by Agent Rainbow's effects.Īfter the amnesia-stricken Desmond reaches his office, he sees Tonia in her usual place, the only living being connecting his entrapment in the psychological world to his actual life. This lapse in awareness from Desmond could be the reason why he did not re-consider his purchase of a lily plant, a house-plant notoriously toxic to felines.ĭue to Desmond's mistake, Tonia ingested the flowers of the plant, and ultimately passed away, leaving the distraught Desmond without a companion, and with faltering hope. Tragically, as Desmond's patients began dying or falling ill one after the other, Desmond's care of Tonia faltered when his girlfriend Magdalena left him due to his emotional unavailability. Tonia was described by Desmond as an intelligent, playful, 'angelic' and even all-knowing cat- one he treated as well as he could for the time he owned her. Tonia often served as emotional relief and unconditional company for the psychiatrist, who felt immense psychological stress from the difficulties of his work. Desmond found an instant charm in the kitten, and raised her as his only pet, to adulthood. Desmond Wales several years before the story of In Sound Mind took place.
